The curriculum provides a rich range of formal and informal learning opportunities that take full advantage of our unique ôlocationsö in New York Cityùthe cultural capital of the worldùand in a department of exceptional artistic and intellectual diversity at a renowned research university. We offer three M.A. programs: (1) Teachers of Music, All Grades (48 credits) for those seeking initial teacher certification; (2) Teachers of Music, All Grades (36 credits) for teachers seeking professional teacher certification; and (3) Music in Higher Education for College and University Faculty (36 credits). Students complete student teaching experiences in public schools and arts venues; attend master classes with today's leading performers and teachers in New York City; and perform in ensembles that prepare them in repertoire that includes traditional classical to modern to the most cutting-edge electronic new music styles while also encompassing popular styles. A summer Kodßly certification workshop is offered. Doctoral students acquire a thorough grounding in significant historical and current issues as well as new, developing paradigms in music education. The Ph.D. program concentrates on research and theoretical development; the Ed.D. program focuses on action research and the implementation of existing theories.
