The Indiana University School of Medicine • Is the state’s only medical school. By comparison, Ohio and Illinois each have seven medical schools. • Provided medical education to approximately two-thirds of Indiana’s physicians. • Main campus is in Indianapolis while eight other centers are located in Fort Wayne, Muncie, Evansville, Gary, South Bend, Terre Haute, Lafayette, and Bloomington. Educates the second largest medical student body in the U.S. • Graduates approximately 280 medical students each year. In 2003, there were 262 graduates. • Is the nation’s third-largest producer of medical school faculty. That means that the experience our students, residents and interns gain here has far-reaching impact in the training of future generations of physicians. • Faculty has performed many “firsts” in Indiana including transplants of the kidney, liver, cornea, bone marrow, pancreas and infant and newborn hearts. • Is conducting more than 900 research studies among 25 academic departments and 18 centers and institutes. • Doctors are nationwide leaders in minimally invasive cardiac surgery and state-of-the-art heart valve surgery.
