NYU Steinhardt offers the only academic program in the United States in educational theatre that leads to B.S., M.A., Ed.D., and Ph.D. degrees. The program emphasizes the applications of theatre in a range of community and educational settings, with course work in production and performance; criticism, aesthetics, and research; theatre and drama education; artist-in-residence strategies; and theatre for and by young people. It provides pathways of specialization in applied theatre, drama education, and play production for artists and educators. The program produces plays year-round for young and adult audiences with accompanying workshops and applied theatre projects in the Black Box Studio, the Provincetown Playhouse, and community venues. The program offers teacher certification preparation through the M.A. in Educational Theatre with Teacher Certification in Theatre, All Grades and the Dual Certification M.A. in Educational Theatre with English or Social Studies. Here, students are trained as theatre, English, or social studies teachers and are placed in field settings with cooperating mentors. Alternatively, students can enroll in the M.A. program in Educational Theatre for Colleges and Communities, where they explore and research the power of theatre in a range of contexts. The program offers internships and extensive experiences in a variety of professional settings, including nationally prominent theatres for young audiences; health and justice; media networks and schools; and government, arts, and community centers. The small and very selective doctoral programs emphasize scholarship and applied research and prepare graduates for faculty positions in universities and colleges throughout the world and for leadership positions in theatres and arts organizations. Graduate students in educational theatre may participate in study abroad programs in Dublin, London, Puebla, Rio de Janeiro, San Juan, and Gulu (Uganda).
