SIS offers two-year standard masterÆs programs in the following fields: Comparative and Regional Studies, Global Environmental Politics,International Communication,International Development,International Economic Policy,International Politics, International Peace and Conflict Resolution, and United States Foreign Policy.

SIS also offers a one-year executive masterÆs program (Master of International Service) for mid-career professionals with significant work experience in international affairs, and a Ph.D. program in International Relations. Additionally, the School has dual degree programs with Ritsumeikan University in Japan, Korea University, Sookmyung WomenÆs University, and the University of Peace in Costa Rica. Dual J.D./M.A. and M.A./M.B.A. programs are also available on the American University campus.

Within the graduate curriculum, students can tailor their programs to reflect their special interest and career paths and are also encouraged to integrate professional experience, including internships. General M.A. degree requirements include: 39-42 credit hours of approved graduate course work, a comprehensive examination, demonstration of research and writing skills through completion of a masterÆs thesis, substantial research paper requirement, or research practicum, and proficiency in a modern foreign language. General Ph.D. degree requirements include 72 credit hours of approved graduate coursework consisting of 60 hours of course credits and 12 credit hours of independent dissertation supervision.
