Graduate Assistantships
Application Deadline
SUNY Plattsburgh offers over 25 graduate assistantships for well-qualified, full-time matriculated graduate students, allowing them the opportunity to grow professionally while pursuing a Master’s or C.A.S. degree. Generally graduate assistantships begin in the fall semester and run for the academic year (10 months). The majority of assistantships are only available on the Main Campus. Full-time graduate assistants typically work 20 hours a week during the academic year. Part-time graduate assistants may work from 10 to 15 hours a week, depending on the position. All assistantships carry a tuition waiver and a stipend. Full-time graduate assistants receive 100% of the in-state tuition rate and a stipend of $5,320 or more per academic year, depending on the position. Part-time graduate assistants receive 50% to 75% of the in-state tuition rate and a stipend of $2660 or more, depending on the specific position. Residence Directors also receive housing and a partial meal plan. Each academic year, different assistantships may be offered. Graduate students may be able to keep their assistantship until they complete their academic degree program. Those graduate students who do not receive an assistantship when they first apply for one are encouraged to reapply in a later semester or year. Three types of graduate assistantships are offered at SUNY Plattsburgh. Some assistantships are only open to those in a particular graduate program; others are open to all graduate students. Residence Directors are responsible for all managerial and programmatic aspects of operating a Residence Hall. Resident Directors supervise a staff of undergraduate Resident Assistants. Administrative Assistants provide programmatic and administrative support to various offices on campus. Research/Teaching Assistants are associated with academic departments and may involve students in a wide variety of activities.

Graduate Diversity Fellowship
Application Deadline
SUNY Plattsburgh’s Graduate Diversity Fellowship Program provides full in-state tuition for up to five graduate students who apply to one of SUNY Plattsburgh’s Graduate Degree Programs for the 2010-2011 academic year, pending SUNY funding. The deadline for Graduate Study Applications for the Fall 2010 Semester and the Graduate Diversity Fellowship Program is February 15, 2010. The newly applying graduate student must complete an essay explaining how s/he contributes to the diversity of the student body in his or her graduate program and how s/he has overcome a disadvantage or other impediment to success in higher education. Examples could include, but are not limited to: as a member of a group underrepresented in your field of study (e.g., male in an historically female career or female in traditionally male career, minority in a field of study with few minority workers); as a first-generation college student; as a non-traditional student (e.g., single mother or father or older adult student); as a person with a disability or disabilities; and/or as a person from an economically disadvantaged background. The fellowship will be awarded for the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters (dependent on the awardee's academic progress). Recipients must be full-time students during the period of the award; in most cases, this means enrollment in a minimum of 12 graduate credits applicable toward the degree. ELIGIBILITY To be eligible for a SUNY Plattsburgh Graduate Diversity Fellowship, an applicant must: 1) Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, 2) Be a newly applying graduate student to a Master's or Certificate of Advanced Study degree program, 3) Be able to contribute to diversity in the graduate degree program or field of study (e.g., diversity in the broadest sense of the word), 4) Have overcome a disadvantage or other impediment to success in higher education, 5) Have high intellectual and professional promise
