Started in 1971, NYU Steinhardt's M.A. program in Visual Arts Administration was the first in the nation to focus on the wide range of opportunities available in the visual arts, both inside and outside the traditional museum context. Mindful of the increasing cultural and economic impact of the visual arts on national and international fronts, the program prepares administrators who can adapt to the current challenges and the changing demands of the field. Today's museums exhibit an expanded sense of educational and social responsibility that enables them to play a more prominent role in their communities. Art galleries, auction houses, and independent consultants exert increased influence in the visual arts. In all of these organizations, the visual arts administrator becomes a powerful educational force, helping to shape cultural values. The program stresses a thorough understanding of the visual arts, the ideas and forces affecting them, and the development of management, marketing, and financial skills. Engage in practical learning through internships around the city and open up enormous career networking opportunities. From the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Pace-Wildenstein Gallery, the possibilities are broad and exciting. Participate in networking opportunities and special guest lectures by prominent arts leaders offered in collaboration with NYU Steinhardt’s graduate programs in Music Business and Performing Arts Administration. Deepen your understanding of global trends and practices in performing and visual arts management through our summer study abroad opportunity in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and Berlin, Germany.
