Degrees: Program Format:
Master's
M.S. - Biochemistry and Biophysics;M.S. in Applied Science
On Campus

The Biochemistry and Biophysics graduate program at Rensselaer emphasizes studies and research at the molecular level. It is sponsored jointly by the Departments of Biology and Chemistry, with additional participation by faculty from other departments in the Schools of Science and Engineering. An advanced degree requires both course work and a research thesis. Research subjects include, but are not limited to:
  • molecular chaperones
  • formation of amyloid bodies
  • behavior of bio-polymers and cells in electric fields
  • modeling of biological processes
  • cell signaling and transduction
  • mechanics and optics of the human lens
  • protein folding
Experimental approaches range from modern molecular genetics and biochemical separation methods to spectroscopic and other physical-chemical methods. The resources for this type of research are extraordinarily rich at Rensselaer, with its strong emphasis on modern technology. Computing facilities and sophisticated analytical instrumentation available here make many difficult tasks easier to perform. Additional research opportunities and facilities are available through collaborations with scientists at the Wadsworth Center of the New York State Department of Health.

You may alternatively choose to pursue the Master of Science in Applied Science with emphasis in biochemistry and biophysics. In this new degree program, you combine master+s-level cooperative education participation, or equivalent industrial experience, with course work for a professional M.S. in Biochemistry and Biophysics.
