The program is designed to prepare students for academic and research-oriented careers. Students in the division become actively involved in research during their first semester, devoting an increasing percent of time toward increasingly independent research throughout their graduate careers. The curriculum is highly individualized, with students typically working closely with several faculty members sharing related interests. There is a high level of intellectual interaction within the division, including a weekly research seminar attended by all division members and collaborative seminars in areas such as symbolic and emotional development.
