The philosophy of the Graduate Biology program is based on the fact that research in the biological sciences is farmore detailed and covers far too broad an area for courses or any arbitrary requirements even to be able to cover asignificant fraction of the known material. As a result, the program is a flexible one. Students are required to taketwo core courses (advanced biochemistry and advanced molecular biology) that teach and stress both thinking andthe fundamentals. In addition, students take specialized courses in their area of research interests; for example -genetics, cell and developmental biology, and physical biochemistry. This permits students to understand andultimately work with material in a wide variety of areas not only during their graduate careers, but throughout theirscientific careers.
