Students enter the Pharmacology and toxicology Graduate Program through the Interdisciplinary Program in Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience Program or direct admission. During the first year, students complete the core curriculum of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular genetics, cell signally, ion channels, and pharmacology and conduct research rotations. A qualifying examination is taken during the second year and consists of writing and defending a grant proposal. The remaining training involves performing original research in the laboratory of a dissertation advisor. Students present departmental seminars and participate in journal clubs. Degree requirements are fulfilled when the student successfully writes and defends their dissertation.
