The multidisciplinary M.A. program in Visual Culture (Theory) links the critical work of art history, art education, and cinema/media studies to practitioners in the visual arts and new media. Join students from a wide variety of backgrounds as you engage the remarkable range of visual material in today's global society, from contemporary art and commercial images to the mass mediation of politics. Internships are available in museums, art magazines, broadcast media, and more. Participate in guest lectures, public workshops, and special programs with faculty engaged in cultural studies throughout the University. Graduates continue on for doctoral study or work both here and abroad as curators, writers, editors, producers, or administrators in museums, galleries, auction houses, film companies, television studios, and multimedia corporations. The 42-credit M.A. program in Visual Culture (Costume Studies) focuses on the history of costume and textiles in its broadest aesthetic and cultural context. Faculty associated with museums and galleries in New York teach courses and students benefit from collections at leading institutions including the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Cooper-Hewitt, and the National Design Museum. Internships enable students to gain first-hand experience and make valuable professional contacts. The program leads to careers as curators, museum administrators, collection managers, and exhibition consultants; as specialists at auction houses and private dealers; as archivists and historical researchers; or as educators, writers, journalists, and critics. The highly selective Ph.D. program in Visual Culture and Education offers two areas of study: (1) Visual Culture-Theory, a criticism- and theory-based approach to the field and (2) Art Education, designed for those students looking to use the visual culture approach in art education--offered in collaboration with NYU SteinhardtÆs Department of Media, Culture and Commu
