The MS degree is usually completed within two years; the goal of this program is to develop scientists with strong interdisciplinary skills in research design, critical thinking, and communication as well as expertise in a specific research area. The PhD degree is usually completed within four years, and prepares students for careers as research scientists in academic institutions, in research laboratories, or with state, federal, and private agencies.
