What is ethnomusicology? At Brown, our orientation is to explore all music making as a human activity: classical music, folk music, popular music, and the musics of indigenous peoples throughout the world. Cultural studies, critical theory, anthropology and sociology inform our studies in order that we document and interpret music both as design or structure and as performance situated in its historical, aesthetic, and social contexts. Ethnomusicology is the study of people making music.
