The program in Foreign Language Education with New York State certification is designed to prepare teachers of Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish language learners at the secondary level. Including a substantial field-based component, our program is based on communicative methods of foreign language learning and a reflective model of teaching that incorporates collaboration with colleagues, students, and community. Our goal is to prepare preservice and in-service teachers with a firm foundation in language, literacy, and applied linguistics along with an understanding of a range of second language teaching approaches that can be adjusted to suit the needs of different learner populations from diverse educational and ethnic backgrounds. Student teaching placements are available at schools that have special partnership arrangements with NYU. Our 12-month, full-time Fast Track M.A. program in Foreign Language Education accelerates your preparation as a certified teacher. Specially designed for recent college graduates and career changers, the Fast Track program leads to initial teacher certification in a new accelerated format that allows you to complete your degree in three consecutive semesters, including summers, of full-time study. Teachers seeking professional certification may study full or part time in our 30-credit program in Foreign Language Education.
