The M.A. program in Mathematics Education leads to New York State initial teacher certification for grades 7-12. Led by faculty with a wide range of classroom experience, scholarly publications, and longtime involvement with professional associations, the program emphasizes content mastery in mathematics, a clear understanding of current instructional materials and pedagogical methods for diverse learners in urban settings, and teaching methods that provoke critical thought and inquiry-based learning. Students in the program with the appropriate mathematical background may take their mathematics courses at NYU's world-renowned Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. The pivotal experience of the program is a two-semester sequence of student teaching at the secondary and middle school levels, where M.A. students—mentored by their cooperating teachers and NYU field supervisors—are given increasing responsibility for teaching in the New York City public schools. Placements are available at schools that have special partnership arrangements with NYU. Our 12-month, full-time, Fast Track M.A. program option accelerates your preparation as a certified teacher. Specially designed for recent college graduates and career changers, the Fast Track program leads to initial teacher certification in an accelerated format that allows you to complete your degree in two consecutive semesters plus two summers of full-time study. Students may also enroll in our fall entry program. The Math for America Fellowship program offers financial and academic support to help you become a certified mathematics teacher in exchange for a teaching commitment in New York City public schools. Current teachers seeking professional certification may study full or part time in our 30-credit program.
