Programs in early childhood education and childhood education prepare teachers and other professionals to work with children from birth through later childhood. The master’s programs, leading to the M.A. degree, fulfill academic requirements for either initial or professional teacher certification in New York State. Our 12- to 14-month, full-time, Fast Track M.A. programs in teacher education accelerate your preparation as a certified teacher. Specially designed for recent college graduates and career changers, the Fast Track program leads to initial teacher certification in a new accelerated format that allows you to complete your degree in three consecutive semesters, including summers, of full-time study. We also offer dual certification programs in Special Education/Early Childhood Education and Special Education/Childhood Education for those aspiring to be teachers. We encourage people who already hold certification in Early Childhood or Childhood Education to consider supplemental areas of study that will enhance their current teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners, like TESOL, Special Education, or Literacy Education. Student teaching placements are available at schools that have special partnership arrangements with NYU. For those interested in graduate studies beyond the master’s level, a Ph.D. is offered. The Programs in English Education and Early Childhood and Childhood Education jointly offer four-week, 6-9 credit graduate summer study abroad programs in London and Oxford, England, and Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and Porto Alegre, Brazil.
