The Language and Literacy in Education Division (LLE) provides students with a rich range of experiences needed to understand the ways in which language is learned and used in educational settings. Viewing language as an integral part of social and cognitive development, we pay particular attention to the cultural and political contexts in which it occurs. Students in the division explore the cultures of schools, classrooms, communities, and other social settings. Through coursework, participation in research projects and other opportunities they are encouraged to question methods and assumptions to examine alternatives, and to propose change where needed.
