The Department of Philosophy offers programs of study leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The University was authorized to award a Ph.D. in Philosophy in July 1994, and the department admitted students in the fall of 1995. Both programs provide a foundation in logic and thehistory of philosophy for all students. Students may specialize in a broad diversityof areas, which fall into three general areas of strength in the department.
  • The History of Philosophy- including ancient philosophy, medieval philosophy,rationalism, empiricism, German Idealism, 19th- and 20th- century philosophy,American philosophy and history of ethics.
  • The History and Philosophy of Science- including foundations of probability and statistics, medieval and modern history of science, foundations of physics, and the role of instrumentation in science.
  • Normative and Interpretive Philosophy - including aesthetics, ethics, environmental philosophy, contemporary continental philosophy, philosophy of religion, hermeneutics and deconstruction, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and action theory.
The Philosophy Department also encourages work that crosses interdisciplinary boundaries;it has formal and informal connections with many other programs, among them: art,classics, comparative literature, criminal justice, education, law, linguistics, medicine,music, nursing, physics, psychology, religious studies, theatre and speech, women's studies.
