The Department of Biology’s Molecular Biology and Genetics Graduate Program emphasizes building your practical skills and scientific knowledge, as well as, providing intensive lab experience. You will have access to a large number of outstanding research advisors. You participate in “lab rotations” to sample the interests, approaches, and styles of three different laboratories. This allows you to make informed decisions about what area of research you pursue and which laboratory you join. A faculty mentor and group of advisory faculty train students in how to perform independent, rigorous, and creative research using powerful approaches and state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. You will have access to key research areas within broad disciplines such as cell biology; developmental biology; genetics; genomics; microbiology, and plant sciences. Program strengths include: • Development, especially in the model systems: Drosophila, Arabidopsis, and C. elegans • DNA mutagenesis and repair • Gene expression regulation • Microbial development, environmental interactions, and pathogenesis • Mitosis, meiosis, and the cytoskeleton • Molecular evolution and evolutionary developmental biology • Plant development and plant–pathogen interactions • Signal transduction
