UD’s nationally recognized materials engineering program attracts large amounts of funding and top research opportunities. We draw students from as far away as France, Germany and Japan, while maintaining leadership in areas such as composites, titanium and non-destructive evaluation (NDE). The materials engineering students enjoy a close connection to the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), with up to 57 percent of UDRI research being materials-related. Areas of research, often integral to our region, include aerospace-alloys, composite-materials, composite processing, NDE and structural ceramics. Research facilities available to our students constitute some of the best materials engineering research facilities in the world. At Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), the Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) has one of the largest and best equipped materials research laboratories in the world. Research opportunities exist with the UDRI, AFRL’s Materials Laboratory and Propulsion Laboratory, Delphi, AK Steel, General Electric Aircraft Engine (GEAE) Division, Edison Materials Technology Center (EMTEC) and more. Distance learning is available.
