The Graduate School of Social Work was authorized in 1974 and offers the Master of Social Work Degree. TheSchool is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and is one of eighty-five (85) accredited graduateSchools of Social Work in the U.S.A. The School prepares students for professional social work practice. Itsubscribes to a problem-solving model of service delivery and the model is supported by a theory base which isessentially developmental and draws heavily on ego psychology, systems approaches, psychological and behavioral theory.

The purpose of the DSW program is to produce scholar/practitioners who will provide leadership in family-centeredsocial work practice. Special emphasis is placed on contributing to the knowledge base for social work practice andservice delivery on behalf of diverse, especially African-American, families. The program seeks students and facultywith the capacity for and commitment to a focus on the family as the unit of attention in research and theorydevelopment. Knowledge building for effective service delivery to African-American families, and disseminatingknowledge for family-centered social work will be paramount.
