The Department of Physiology in the School of Medicine offers advanced graduate study leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The program also offers opportunities for study in the Graduate Program in Neuroscience (GPN) through a joint effort involving four departments: Anatomy, Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Physiology. Current research interests in the department include: cell physiology including ion transport, volume regulation, cardiac and neural excitability, excitation-contraction coupling, hormonal signaling (glucocorticoids, peptides, placental prostaglandins), and nonionizing radiation; human cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology; microcirculation; gastrointestinal physiology; molecular biology; muscle, steroid receptors; network analysis; neuroscience including development, plasticity, regeneration, transmitter neurochemistry, chemical senses, motor and sensory processing and pain.
