The Department of Botany offers considerable variety in graduate programs leading to master's and doctoral degrees. These programs reflect the department's commitment to maintain broad interests spanning the major areas of research within the plant sciences-ecology, genetics, anatomy/morphology, physiology/cell biology, and systematics/evolution. Within these areas, there are opportunities for specialization in population, community, and physiological ecology; ecosystem analysis and biogeochemistry; plant molecular biology/genetics; cell and developmental physiology; taxonomy/systematics of major groups, ranging from seaweeds, fungi, lichens, and mosses through flowering plants; tropical plant systematics; and marine ecology/physiology.
