No specific undergraduate major is required, but 20 semester hours in the social, biological, or psychological sciences is normally required. One year of paid/volunteer experience in human services is preferred as is 1 year of general work experience. A BSW is required for consideration of Advanced Standing. The Ph.D. requires an MSW and post master’s clinical experience; allied degrees may be considered.  Pre-Requisite Courses No specific undergraduate major is required, but 20 semester hours in the social, biological, or psychological sciences is normally required. MSW applicants are not required to, but may, submit GRE scores. PhD applicants are required to take the MAT and have the official score sent to the School on or before February 1.  International Student Requirements Applicants who are citizens of other countries should follow the application procedures outlined. Applicants are encouraged to have some experience in a social work program before attending the School. Applicants with an undergraduate degree in social work or equivalent course work may qualify for advanced standing. A substantial working knowledge of English is essential for admission. Applicants for whom English is not a first language must take the TOEFL iBT and send an official score report to the School (minimum score: TOEFL iBT - 89). If the TOEFL test is taken on paper or by computer, the TSE, Test of Spoken English is also required (minimum score - 50). The minimum test scores for the paper based TOEFL is 550; computer generated is 207-233. TOEFL requirement may be waived by the Admission Committee if English has been the primary language spoken in the home and at school. While the deadline for admission is February 28, preference is given to applications filed before February 1: those received after that date will be considered to fill remaining vacancies. Special requests for filing an application after February 28 should be directed to the Office of Admission. A filing fee of $60, made payable to the Smith College School for Social Work, must be remitted with the application. This fee is not refunded or credited toward future fees.   1/5/2010 MSW Non-Binding Early Decision Deadline Application Deadline The School begins to process applications on September 1 for enrollment into the next academic year, which starts in June.
