The faculty conduct active research in animal physiology, cancer biology, cellular and molecular biology, aquatic and terrestrial ecology, evolution, genetics and genomics, immunology, microbiology, neurobiology, parasitology, and vector biology. The research programs in biological sciences receive external funding in excess of $15 million per year, mainly from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).
