The Department of English provides a program that combines a grounding in literary history with studies in a range of theoretical, methodological and interdisciplinary approaches, including philosophical, theological, historical and sociological perspectives. The department has close ties with Notre Dame's renowned Medieval Institute. The Keough Institute for Irish Studies offers students the opportunity to join one of the leading international centers of Irish studies while working both at Notre Dame and in Ireland. In addition to the tradional fields, the department offers resources for the study of critical theory, literature and science, literature and politics, history of the book, performance studies, postcolonial and ethnic cultures, transnational and comparative approaches, and gender studies.
