This grounding in theory and practice culminates in the internship experience with students working alongside professionals in archives, libraries, galleries, and museums. The Museum Studies certificate is granted as a supplement to a graduate degree program. This dual approach follows the American Association of Museums' recommendations that specialized museum training be combined with one or more academic disciplines as the ideal preparation for a professional career. Presently students come from the departments of anthropology, art, arts administration, art education, art history, classics, dance, history, humanities, information studies, interior design, recreation and leisure services administration, textiles and consumer science, and theatre. Other departments may be added as the program grows. Students in the program benefit from the unique opportunity of studying at the FSU Ringling Center for the Cultural Arts in Sarasota, with its world-renowned fine arts museum, circus collection, historic home, and Asolo Theatre. Museums located on the Tallahassee campus include the Museum of Fine Arts, the Historic Textile and Clothing Collection, and The Institute on World War II and the Human Experience. These provide a rich training ground for the museum professional of the future. Florida State University, located in the state capital of Tallahassee, is designated as a Carnegie Doctoral Research Extensive institution. Official TOEFL results are required of all international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied in an English-speaking country for at least one academic year. A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, or 80 on the internet-based test is required for admission to the University, although some departments require higher scores at the graduate level.
