Today, all educators must be reading teachers. Educators have made reading instruction a priority in the school curriculum. Many children come to school with a sense of the importance of reading in their lives - but they often do not have the skills to act on that realization.

Because the student population has changed dramatically, educators need to teach language and literacy skills in a manner that supports diversity and the rights of others. And because technology is rapidly changing education and society, educators recognize that they must respond to the challenges presented by new technologies.

New technologies have not diminished the need for students to comprehend the written word - they have increased the importance of reading comprehension. When integrated into the language and literacy curriculum, learning technologies can be powerful tools for improving reading and writing schools.
