The advent of recombinant DNA technology has catapulted the biotechnology industry to the forefront of biology career opportunities. In the medical sciences, gene therapy and immunotherapy have played a major role in the fight against hereditary diseases and cancer. In agriculture, biotechnology has created a multitude of plants resistant to to diseases and drought. In the environmental sciences, bioremediation by genetically altered bacteria is used to clean up polluted sites. In law enforcement, biotechnology is used to identify perpetrators.
