Master's
Master of Arts in New Arts Journalism
On Campus

In a rapidly changing media environment, in terms of both content and the platforms through which that content is communicated, there is a pressing need for skilled individuals who can write about art and design for diverse audiences. This program is designed for students interested in acquiring the skills and experiences to function as art and design journalists for newspapers, magazines, trade journals, blogs, radio/TV, and the web even as those formats are shifting and evolving. Our students will study the rubrics of journalism and how to write reviews, essays, interviews, and feature stories, and examine the contexts of investigative reporting, the opinion piece, and the critical essay, etc. As a visual arts academy, the SAIC is well positioned to apply these largely textual skills to the multi-tasking demands of contemporary arts journalism, where text and image are intertwined and where a journalist is often the initial designer and editor of his or her feature. The curriculum will include courses in production and design in print, photography, video, and web-based formats.
