The Department of English, including the undergraduate program in humanities, is the largest academic department in the university. The department excels in research and publication, graduate teaching, and curriculum development, and is philosophically committed to educating graduate students to become effective scholars, writers, and teachers. The low faculty-student ratio and small graduate seminars allow for close working relationships and effective communication between faculty members and graduate students. In addition, lectures by prominent visiting scholars, graduate student colloquia, and social gatherings encourage critical thinking and the interchange of ideas within the department.
