Increasingly, progress in the study of neurobiology is requiring multidisciplinary approaches that draw from the areas of electrophysiology, molecular biology, genetics, behavior and cognitive neuroscience. We have recognized this fact and are continuously adapting our program to fit the needs of tomorrow's scientists. The Interdepartmental Program in Neuroscience at the University of Utah is a Ph.D. degree granting program administered by an executive committee that is made up of representatives from 14 participating departments and includes over 70 faculty. These departments have collaborated to make an effective interdepartmental program that extends throughout the University. The Neuroscience Program Core Curriculum aims to provide a rigorous academic base from which students can pursue studies in any neuroscience discipline. The core curriculum includes didactic sessions designed to provide a basic theoretical understanding of the electrical properties of the cell, development of the nervous system, synaptic transmission and basic cognitive psychology. Students learn modern techniques in neuroscience by conducting experiments during four half-semster laboratory rotations. The combined didactic sessions and laboratory rotations culminate in a neuroscience "boot camp" in which students learn electrophysiological techniques from acknowledged experts in the field. The neuroscience community meets twice a year at local resorts in the Wasatch Mountains to hear talks from specialists and to discuss selected topics of interest. We believe this graduate program competes with the finest programs offered in the country today. The Interdepartmental Program in Neuroscience at the University of Utah provides a rounded and thorough neuroscience education, which will prepare a student for a successful career in any area of neurobiology.
