The graduate program is focused on students seeking a Ph.D. This degree is designed for persons who anticipate careers in research, possibly combined with teaching or other activities. Each student's program is highly individualized. There are few formal course requirements, although students are expected to design programs that include reasonable breadth and depth. Each of the program areas in the program has its own guidelines for suitable coursework. The culmination of the Ph.D. program is presentation of a dissertation thatdescribes original research that has been carried out under the supervision of a member of the faculty. The department also rarely admits students for master's degree programs.
