The focus is on the 19th and 20th centuries, the latter including Soviet, post-Soviet and emigre literature. The program's comparatively small size enables graduate students to work closely with the department's high caliber faculty. The doctoral degree is designed to prepare students for careers in university-level teaching and scholarship.
