The graduate program combines traditional study of Russian literature and language with a more specialized concentration on such areas as literary theory, the relation of Russian literature to its cultural context, and the interrelation of Russian literature with cinema, painting, architecture, and theater. The focus is on the 19th and 20th centuries, the latter including Soviet, post-Soviet and emigre literature. The program's comparatively small size enables graduate students to work closely with the department's high caliber faculty. The doctoral degree is designed to prepare students for careers in university-level teaching and scholarship. The master's degree is intended primarily as preparation for doctoral study.
