The Department of French and Italian offers both the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy in French. The programs emphasize the historic exchange of culture and ideas between the United States and France, as well as the French innovations in critical theory, social and political thought that have transformed art, literature and philosophy in both countries. Faculty research strengths include new historicism, deconstruction, literary theory, Renaissance literature, classical drama, the 18th century, poetry, theater and fiction of 19th and 20th century France, feminist writers and criticism,and the relationship between literature and the arts.
