The Department of Chemistry at The University of Iowa is seriously committed to providing its students with the skills needed to meet the chemical challenges of the 21st century. Students are provided with the resources and opportunities they need to grow as scientists. Expectations for the progress of our students are high, and for students committed to becoming better scientists, the support of the faculty isstrong. Opportunities are provided to take survey courses in the traditional areas of chemistry (inorganic, organic, physical, and analytical) as well as in special topics. Research areas are highly varied and often interdisciplinary. Students can receive hands-on training in such high-tech areas as lasers, instrumentation design, computers, and laboratory automation. Students have access to state-of-the-art FTNMR and FTIRinstruments, mass spectrometers, X-ray diffractometers, and computers. Students' communication skills are enhanced through teaching in the undergraduate program as well as through presentations at local, regional, and national meetings and divisional seminars.
