Graduate Certificate in Gerontology
On Campus

The University of Northern Colorado Master of Arts degree in Gerontology prepares students for professional responsibility and leadership in the aging network. Graduates find employment in health or mental health related positions, long term care residential or community settings, senior centers, recreation programs, agencies and organizations providing care management and/or administrating policy, community college teaching, industrial and business settings, or private consultation and business. Our on-campus program enables students to meet the rigorous standards of a multidisciplinary knowledge of aging, skill acquisition and application, and personal development as an aging network professional. Class sizes are small and meet in the afternoons and evenings, and students receive individual academic advising and support from faculty throughout the program. Course topics on aging include social policy, community resources, health and wellness, psychosocial aging, program planning, grant writing and administration, management concepts for aging services, and research. Students also take elective courses of interest that are relevant to their individual goals. The UNC gerontology program has close community ties with the aging network, providing students with internship, practicum, volunteer, and other learning and networking opportunities. Research and teaching experiences are available with faculty approval, including an elective thesis. Rather than a comprehensive exam at the end of the program, students develop a comprehensive portfolio of coursework and experiential material that showcases their knowledge, skills, and professional development in gerontology. UNC is a member of WICHE, the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education program, which allows out-of-state graduate students from 14 states to pay in-state tuition for our gerontology graduate programs.
