Our program tends to attract students from all fifty states and various other nations. As a terminal Masters program, all our graduate resources are directed toward the MA students, and thus our program is very well suited for those students who seek to prepare for a PhD program, pursue a career teaching in Community Colleges, or advance themselves intellectually and professionally in their careers in secondary education. Our primary student funding is through Teaching Assistantships which include a stipend and waiver of tuition and student fees. Additional resources are available for conference travel and research projects through the Graduate Student Association. Teaching Assistants are assigned offices and mentored in the profession of teaching through a seminar before the first semester begins and also through active mentoring during the semester. The program consists of thirty hours of courses and a Masters Project. Fifteen hours of required courses include Critical Theory, American Literature, and British Literature. The remaining fifteen hours may be clustered around various course topics such as composition, film, literature, pedagogy, rhetoric, and independent studies with faculty. The Masters Project is an article-length project written for a committee of faculty and then presented orally to the department. We seek to provide a strong sense of community and collegiality to mentor our graduate students into the profession and discipline of English and related fields. Graduate students are encouraged to participate as fully as they wish in the life of the department, and the graduate students maintain various organizations for their mutual benefit and edification.
