Admission to the master's degree program normally requires an undergraduate degree in music from an accredited college or equivalent proficiency. Requirements for the degree include 32 hours of coursework (or 26 hours of coursework plus 6 hours of thesis). The Department of Music strives to give each student a quality musical education. The special attributes of the Department are its artist faculty and a well-balanced program among the disciplines of performance, music education, music history, and composition and theory. UNM is located in the heart of Albuquerque, a metropolitan center of over 700,000 people. The city is nestled next to the Sandia Mountains, noted for their beautiful watermelon color during the splendid sunsets that characterize the New Mexico high-desert landscape. The state's major waterway, the Rio Grande, runs through the city on its way south to the Mexican border. With an average of 340 days of sunshine annually, the climate provides for many opportunities for a wide range of outdoor activities. The beauty of the physical surroundings, coupled with the rich cultural and artistic heritage of New Mexico, makes studying at UNM a rewarding and enjoyable experience. The UNM Center for the Arts is home to several of the nation's finest performance and teaching facilities, including a 2000-seat auditorium, a 284-seat recital hall, two large rehearsal halls, classrooms, practice rooms, and teaching studios. The Fine Arts Library, located in the center, houses over 215,000 volumes, 18,000 LPs and 6000 CDs.
