The graduate program at the Missouri School of Journalism provides a unique combination of practical experience, research and theory in many dimensions of journalism and mass communication. As the world and its communication systems become more complex, graduate training is critical for preparing communicators to provide the information citizens need.

Both the professional and the research tracks at Missouri are theory-based. Each student is expected to have working knowledge of theory about media and cultural effects, philosophy, history, literature of the media, and law and ethics. The working assumption is that a background of this nature will enable professionals and researchers to make significant contributions to journalism and mass communication.
