The Entomology Department is a large and internationally renowned department with 35 faculty and approximately 250 students, researchers, and staff. The department maintains a strong and integrated balance between investigations into basic science, and problem-solving applied research aimed at directly benefiting US agriculture and the general public. Course offerings and research opportunities span the entire field of entomology, from classical morphology and taxonomy through to cutting edge insect molecular biology (see more complete listing below). The department has excellent research facilities, which besides the apparatus and equipment in individual research groups, includes a state of the art quarantine facility for work with exotic and transgenic insects, plants, and nematodes; large blocks of experimental fields and greenhouses; and access to the statewide network of UC field stations and natural reserves. The campus also has excellent research support facilities including a state-of-the-art electron microscopy center; two centers for state-of-the-art light and confocal microscopy; a center for bioinformatics; a genomics institute with facilities for nucleotide and peptide synthesis, cell transformations, making and analyzing microarrays, real-time PCR; a regional mass spectrometry laboratory; and a sophisticated computer visualization center.
