The Department of English offers graduate degrees with concentrations in most fields of British and American literature and in special fields of inquiry such as gender studies, literary theory, and nature and the environment. In addition, it offers an M.A. degree with an emphasis in Creative Writing (poetry, fiction, nonfiction). In all degree programs strong emphasis is placed on breadth of literary knowledge as well as on intensive work in the specific area of the student's interest. Offerings of the English department are complemented by the resources of the Humanities Institute, which fosters development of the humanities across the disciplines through lectures, seminars, and faculty exchanges, and by Designated Emphases in Critical Theory, Feminist Theory and Research, and Native American Studies.
