The Department offers an interdisciplinary graduate program focussing on the study of public discourses, rhetorical theory, and the history of rhetoric.Within these three broad areas, faculty and graduate student interests range from film, literature, oral traditions and history to law, social and politicaltheory, and philosophical and scientific discourse. During their first two years, graduate students explore major areas in the history and theory of rhetoricand pursue a variety of special topics in seminars. Beginning in their fifth semester, they prepare in greater depth for their doctoral QualifyingExaminations and dissertation research. Because of the Department's commitment to interdisciplinary research, graduate students are encouraged at everystage of their careers to work with faculty in other departments.
