The department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Pathology. The graduate programs emphasize Plant-Microbe interactions. The tools of Genetics, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology are applied to the study of microbes, both prokaryotic and eukaryotic, and also viruses and nematodes, that are either pathogenic or beneficial to plant health. A strong academic program underpins rigorous research training in both basic and applied aspects of plant pathology and plant-microbe interactions. Students have an opportunity to rotate in two or three research programs before committing to a thesis or dissertation topic. Teaching opportunities include assistantships in several courses in the Undergraduate Microbiology Program.
