The units are evenly divided between professional and theoretical courses. Graduates are prepared to enter the fields of journalism and allied professions, and to pursue further academic study. The journalism department offers a professionally oriented program leading to a Master of Arts degree. The program prepares students to work in print, broadcast, online and international journalism. The program is designed for students who either have no previous journalism education or experience or who are professionals in mid-career. The curriculum is intended to meet the strong demand from the news media for advanced research and news presentation skills. Courses range from skills courses such as reporting, editing, media management and research techniques to theory courses such as freedom of expression, ethics and the study of media performance in current affairs. Students interested in international journalism can take advantage of interdisciplinary course work. The journalism department offers several courses with an international emphasis, and there are unique opportunities for students to add regional studies courses through collaboration with the Center for Latin American Studies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and the Department of Near Eastern Studies.
