The major objectives of the department include both the provision of broad cultural foundations and the preparation of students for a variety of careers: teaching, administration, publishing, business, and government service. The department emphasizes literature, language, composition, rhetoric, and public speaking. The graduate English major may specialize in English or American literature, in the English language, or in rhetoric.
