The Department of Physics offers courses and research experience leading to the Master of Arts, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in physics and the Master of Science degree in Applied Physics. Advanced-degree candidates may pursue thesis research in experimental, computational, or theoretical AMO (atomic, molecular, and optical) physics, nuclear and particle physics, or solid state physics as well as research in physics pedagogy. Special programs are available for students who are preparing for careers in undergraduate teaching. Thesis and nonthesis programs are offered leading to the MS and MA degrees. A written comprehensive examination must be passed prior to the nonthesis master's final oral or the PhD preliminary oral examination. There are no foreign language requirements.
