The degree offers continued professional development in several concentration areas to include: Educational Technology; Elementary Education; English Education, Mathematics Education, Reading , and Science Education. Practical and theoretical, the Curriculum and Instruction degree requires 36 hours of graduate work including courses in foundation and application, support, and concentration areas. Many of the courses are delivered electronically, Internet or compressed video. Candidates who choose to pursue the Curriculum and Instruction degree must hold a baccalaureate degree in education and meet the requirements of admission to Graduate Studies. The required courses for the M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction include the following: Foundation Courses (12 hours) EDUC 5840 Research Based Decision Making EDUC 5850 Action Research for School Improvement EDCI 5020 Curriculum Development for School Improvement EDCI 5030 Instructional Improvement and Assessment Curriculum & Instruction (Support) Courses (12 hours) EDCI 5110 Reflective and Coherent Classroom Practice EDCI 5120 Advanced Instructional Theories and Strategies EDCI 5130 Teaching Diverse Learners EDCI 5140 Clinical Internship Mathematics Education. Enroll in the following: Math 5150 Foundations of Mathematics Math 5500 Introduction to Modern Analysis I Math 5560 Introduction to Modern Analysis II Math 5530 Selected Topics in Mathematics     Accreditation Information: All degree programs at the bachelor’s level and those leading to add-on certification in education and those programs leading to the Master of Education, and Educational Specialist degrees are accredited by NCATE  # Of Credits Required:   Time To Degree:     Previous Degrees Mathematics Education (504D) Undergraduate preparation: certification to teach mathematics. Special requirements: minimum of 36 semester hours to include: A. Foundations: Education Curriculum and Instruction 5020, 5030, Education 5010, and 5850. B. Support Area: Education Curriculum and Instruction 5110, 5120, and 5130. C. Concentration Area: 12 hours from selected 4000- level Mathematics courses. D. Application Area: Education Curriculum and Instruction 5140.  Pre-Requisite Courses International Student Requirements Admission for International Students To be admitted for graduate study, international students must present to Northwestern State University an evaluation of their educational credentials by a United States professional evaluating service that has been approved by the university. International students must also meet all requirements for admission to the Graduate School. In addition, other documents required are: official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores (minimum score of 500 paper and 173 computer), an official Financial Statement Certification verifying bank funds available in U.S. dollars, an Educational Experience by Years list, a Health Form, and Immunization Record. All admission records must be on file at least 30 days prior to the date of registration. Application on file prior to registration; 3. Official transcripts on file prior to registration; 4. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores with a minimum of 750 on verbal plus quantitative sections; 5. Two letters of recommendation. All graduate students must furnish official transcripts from each college or university attended. All students applying for entry or re-entry to graduate study at Northwestern must be eligible to return to their former institutions to be considered for admission to Northwestern. No credit will be granted to a student by Northwestern for work done while suspended or dismissed from any institution.
