NAU offers the following emhapsis for an M.A in English: Creative Writing; Secondary English Education; General English; Literacy, Technology & Professional Writing; and Literature. The Creative Writing emphasis allows you to balance academic coursework in English with the serious study of creative writing. The Secondary English Education emphasis provides you with the necessary coursework to earn post-degree certification in English Education so that you may obtain a position as a secondary English/Language Arts teacher. The General Ensligh emphasis allows students to shape a program to suit their own goals. Our students include working professionals, K-12 teachers, community college adjunct faculty, students preparing for a Ph.D. program, and life-long learners. Literacy, Technology, and Professional Writing emphasis prepares students for successful careers as writers and communication specialists in the working worlds of business, industry, education, and government. To complete the Literature emphasis, students must successfully complete 21 hours of literature courses from 3 categories as outlined below: 3 hours from Methods/Theory, 12 hours from Traditions, and 6 hours from New Contexts. Click here for literature course descriptions. Students must also complete 3 hours of directed research (Eng. 685, Eng. 697, or Eng. 699), and 12 hours of electives approved by their graduate advisor. In addition to this coursework, the degree plan includes a required presentation at the NAU Graduate English Symposium, a professional conference, or other approved venue.
