Geoscience is a multi-disciplinary field emphasizing the chemistry, physics, geology, hydrology, fate and contaminant transport, and economics of the earth and its naturally occurring mineral resources. Seven degree options are available: Geochemistry is an interdisciplinary field of study in which the principles of chemistry are used to study or solve problems by drawing from a range of backgrounds in chemistry, environmental sciences and geology. Students studying in this area acquire strong fundamental and practical knowledge in chemistry and environmental geochemistry. Geological Engineering students may specialize in mining geology and geomechanics/geotechnical engineering; including slope stability analysis and design, numerical modeling of geological materials, and earthquake engineering. State-of-the-art equipment is utilized and research is conducted both in the field and in specialized materials testing and computational laboratories. Thesis research is stimulated by the geological features, seismic activity, mineral deposits, and mining operations in the region surrounding Montana Tech. The Geology option is intended for students with geoscience-related bachelor’s degrees. Coursework and thesis projects tend to be more descriptive in nature than for the Geological Engineering option. Geophysical Engineering embodies the exploration and appraisal of the earth’s interior by collecting and analyzing physical measurements collected at the earth’s surface in boreholes, and from aircraft and satellites. Geophysical engineers are employed in oil, mining and environmental fields. Hydrogeological Engineering and Hydrogeology students will study the occurrence, movement, and chemistry of groundwater. Research relates to environmental or supply problems associated with mining or agricultural activities.
